1972 Winnipeg/St. Paul 500 and Forrest Tucker

# 320

Racing number 320 was Forrest Tucker from Hollywood California.
Viking Snowmobiles Inc. along with Todd Films out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin were filming a Documentary on the Winnipeg/St. Paul Snowmobile Race.
The Film was named "Over 500 Miles Below Zero" and was sponsored by Hamm`s Brewing Company of St. Paul, Minnesota.
Forrest had never seen a snowmobile in person before he got to Grand Forks, North Dakota, just days before the race.
Viking did not have a Snowmobile suit large enough to fit Forrest, so a suit had to be made when he arrived. As you can see by the picture below,
( Forrest standing next to Art Seydel ) Forrest was a large man. Art Seydel and Della Monteuil were given the task of showing Forrest how to ride a snowmobile.
Knowing those two not a lot of racing secrets were shared !!! Over the years Art has shared many stories of this event.
As a young boy I remember seeing this film on TV. Imagine my surprise when I got an E-Mail and got to talk with the man who filmed this on the telephone.
Yup, Bill Todd contacted him thinking he would be the "Right man for the job". He had just returned from South America doing a Documentary
where they lowered him into an erupting volcano. He said they strapped him on a snowmobile facing backwards with a camera and headed out.
